A space burial is an uncommon type of memorial for most people. The procedure involves placing a small amount of ashes into a capsule and the remains are launched into outer space. The concept of a space burial was introduced by Richard DeGroot in a Seattle Times newspaper article on April 3, 1977. One of the most well-known people to have this type of funeral is Gene Roddenberry, who was the creator of Star Trek. On April 21, 1997 the remains of Roddenberry, along with twenty-two others, were launched into the Earth’s orbit.
