Funeral Flower Etiquette and Traditions

Funeral flowers are considered traditional with most Christian, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox religions.  Flowers should not be displayed on a cross if the deceased is of the Mormon faith.

The Hindu and Buddhist faiths do not traditionally consider flowers as part of the funeral tradition. However, they are appropriate as long as the family expresses that they would like them.

Rather than sending flowers to the funeral home, fruit and food baskets are traditionally sent to the home of Orthodox Jews.

As the opinion of flowers varies with Muslim and Islamic beliefs, it is best to check with the family first.

If you are in doubt as to where to send the flowers, ask the family or funeral home.  Respect the family’s wishes if they have made a request in lieu of flowers.
