Veterans Graves Purchased at Greenwood Cemetery

An Additional 680 veterans graves purchased

To further honor Mercer County residents who served their country in the Armed Forces, County Executive Brian Hughes and Edward Mazzeo, executive director of Mercer County Veteran Services, announced the purchase of an additional 680 veteran burial spaces at Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton, N.J.

The purchase was made in response to the high demand from Mercer County veterans and their families for additional burial spaces.  With the growing number of veterans, the Board of Chosen Freeholders deemed it essential to approve the purchase.   The County also holds an option to expand the section to include an additional 680 graves.

The County originally purchased 1,000 graves in the early 1980s, adding another 500 as requests increased.  There are 288 existing mausoleum spaces available solely for Mercer County Veterans and their spouses who prefer above-ground entombment.

The purchase of the additional burial spaces was announced during a news conference on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at noon on the grounds of the newly purchased “Field of Honor” section that is adjacent to the existing “Field of Honor” in Greenwood Cemetery.  Attending in addition to Hughes and Mazzeo were representatives from CMS-Mid-Atlantic, Inc. and Greenwood Cemetery; they included President and CEO Bernard Stoecklein, Chief Operating Officer William Passodelis, Vice President Dennis Sabatini and John Novey, director of Greenwood Cemetery.

Greenwood Cemetery is honored to be the final resting site for many of the veterans who fought for our freedom in the U.S. Armed Forces,” Stoecklein said.  “In fact, it is very appropriate that Mercer County veterans be layed to rest on the land that is rich in U.S. military history.  General George Washington marched his troops through this land on his way to the Battle of Trenton in 1777.”

Veterans and their families who are interested in burial space or mausoleum entombment at Greenwood Cemetery can visit the cemetery office weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1800 Hamilton Avenue in Hamilton, New Jersey or call 609-587-4993.
