Michael T. Churus,
a recent graduate of Union Senior High School, is the most recent
recipient of the “Realize Your Dream” Scholarship.
In advising Michael of the $5,000 scholarship,
the Realize Your Dream Scholarship Foundation’s Trustee Bernard E. Stoecklein
wrote, “Because of your commitment to excellence, it was an easy decision to
make as you exemplary in your achievements.”
Michael, who is an
Eagle Scout with Troop 85 of Holy Spirit Church, has provided many hours of
service to the Union community over the years. He taught computer skills to senior
citizens, performed repairs at the homes of older members of the Osceola
Presbyterian Church in Clark, New Jersey, collected hundreds of pounds of food
for the local food bank and, the action that captured Stoecklein’s attention, he
organized and led a team of volunteers who trimmed around and cleaned the
memorials of nearly 2,500 of those buried at Hollywood Memorial Park. During a five-month period, Michael
expended more than 400 man hours refurbishing the graves. He ultimately helped reveal more than
100 veterans graves who will now receive the recognition they deserve each
Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
Congratulations are
extended to Michael who will study Business next fall at Union County College. |
